Outdoor enthusiasts will have no shortage of actives to choose from when visiting the city of St. George, Utah. This beautiful desert community is surrounded by some of the west’s most intriguing landscapes. From the towering cliffs of Zion National Park to the thousands of Joshua Trees in the Mohave Desert the diverse scenery found in this area will entice even the most determined couch potato.

Hiking options include trails found in Zion National Park, the Pine Valley Mountains, Snow Canyon State Park and the Arizona Strip. Contact the local visitor’s center or BLM office for maps and suggestions on “must-do” hikes in the area.

There are several boating and fishing locations found in the area. Sand Hollow Reservoir is the most recent addition to the local reservoirs. The two other reservoirs in the area are Gunlock and Quail Creek. All of three of these man-made lakes offer camping facilities as well as boat launches and picnic areas.

Attached to Sand Hollow State Park and Reservoir is an incredible bunch of sand dunes. This area has been a favorite of people with dune buggies, dirt bikes and 4-wheelers for years.

Skiers, snowboarders and mountain bikers will find Brian Head Ski Resort to be an exciting alternative to a desert outing. Located within an hour of St. George, Brian Head provides visitors a chance to play in the mountains and stay in the city.

The St. George area has long been known for year-round golf. This is due to the mild winter temperatures and the amazing clear blues skies of summer. However, you will want to tee-off early in the day during the summer months.

There are ten outstanding golf courses to choose from in the St. George area, including several well maintained city courses.

St. George is a shopping oasis located in the middle of the southwestern Utah and northern Arizona deserts. There are three major malls found in the St. George area. They are the Zion Factory Stores, the Red Cliffs Mall and the Promenade Mall. In addition to these modern shopping facilities there are several antique shops scattered throughout the historic downtown area of the city. Ancestor Square provides a unique shopping experience by offering a blend of old and new, novel and traditional. Located on St. George Blvd, visitors will have no trouble finding this charming and historic shopping center.

There are several museums located in the St. George area. The city has an art museum housed in the remodeled Utah & Idaho Sugar Company Warehouse. Other attractions include the Rosenbruch Wildlife Museum and the Johnson Farm Dinosaur Tracks.

Quite a few historic sites can be found in St. George City and the surrounding area. Some of the more interesting locations include: the LDS Temple Visitor’s Center, Jacob Hamblin Home and the Brigham Young Winter Home. Make a point of stopping by the Green Gate Village, located in the historic downtown district. This area has numerous historic homes, stores and carriage houses to explore.

The city of St. George is host to many festivals and events throughout the year. The most popular being the St. George Marathon. The incredible desert run happens the first weekend in October and is a qualifying race for those wanting to participate in the Boston Marathon.

Other exciting events include; the Arts Festival held each Easter weekend, the Sr. Games held in mid-October, the Purgatory Cup Horse Races held over Labor Day weekend and various rodeos held throughout the spring, summer and fall.
